It’s one thing when a person has come into the church after responding to evangelism, having come from a dire situation in the world. There’s a tendency to side-line people with a past, even though there has been a full restoration of faith and commitment. Maybe it is only my experience, but often there is no way back for such people within evangelical circles. ![]() The father restored all the privileges of sonship to his returned son and made things as though his wild days had never happened. In addition to those, there was also much to be said about restoration, which is something featuring strongly in the parable. It is clear that the author is from an Evangelical, even a fundamentalist, background and therefore I was pleasantly surprised to see not only the chapters on warnings, and of responses to the ‘Aha!’ moment, and so on. ![]() It need not be only regarding vices, but care (or lack of care) of relationships, whether in one’s family or at work or otherwise. Just one more bet, just one more drink, just one more… (fill in your own vice). There can be many kinds of situations that can make us choose to ignore the sensible path. We see the signs, the red flags, the warnings, but are either too blinded with our own thoughts and hopes to see them, or else we are too stubborn, or even we just consider ourselves to know best. We have probably all done it with one thing or another in life. Before you would ever get to a situation of such desperation, the Lord will provide chances and prompts to make a change of trajectory in your life. Idleman correctly emphasises that it is best not to let oneself get to the worst situation or hit ‘rock bottom’, as we sometimes call it. This is about a necessary change of direction in our lives. This is a useful teaching point, something easy for most people to remember. We awaken to the truth of our situation and actions we must be brutally honest with ourselves at times like this we need to take action as soon as possible to move in the right direction. It is here that the prodigal realises he could be in a much better situation and would be better off with his father. More specifically it is the moment when feeding the pigs in the pigpen while suffering starvation. The premise of the book surrounds the ‘Aha!’ moment in the parable of the Prodigal Son. The style is appropriate for the younger reader (teenage upwards) but can be suitable for older readers who prefer a lighter reading style. It is written in a light style with many anecdotes used as teaching points. This book was an easy read compared with most I have read recently. ![]()
